After 58 years of marriage, Con Noi couple Joseph and Jeanette seem as much in love as ever – recounting old memories and cutely debating the finer details.

Vacenti staff member Shelly Mills was lucky enough to sit down with this couple and learn about their story.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Joe escaped as a teenager during the Russian Revolution before relocating to Australia—however “that’s a story for another day,” he advises.

Jeanette, born in Brisbane, met Joe in early 1961. She had been posted to 2Camp Hospital in Ingleburn, NSW as a general duties mess stewardess while waiting to do a driving course. Joe was also in Ingleburn, in training to be an Army cook.

Upon meeting, the two immediately hit it off. They were married by December; Jeanette aged 19, and Joe 21. Joe points to an old photo of him and Jeanette, sitting proudly in their dining room. “I sent this photo to my mum, and told her ‘I’m getting married’”, he says.

Once married, Jeanette left the army (as was customary at the time). Upon exit, she received a medal for her services. Though Jeanette states she feels she does not deserve the medal, Joe is quick to interject. He asserts that it was the policy at the time to be issued a medal when leaving and, besides, she continued to live an Army life with Joe for the following 20 years.

The couple relocated 16 times during Joe’s 20-year Army career. This included a posting to Malaysia (Malaya at the time), for which Jeanette joined him and their second son was born. He also served 12 months in Vietnam, as both a cook and a Platoon Sergeant.

In 1976, Joe was promoted to Warrant Officer (WO2), making him the highest qualified warrant officer (WO2) in the Catering Core at the time. He finally retired from the Army in 1981.

Following this, Joe worked as a food service representative for Nestle in North Queensland, and finished his career as a Field Sales Manager – retiring for good in 1996.

Together, they have two sons. After living in Manly West following retirement, the couple have happily called Con Noi home for almost three years (their Con Noi-versery is 15 July). Joe arrived with a walking stick, however diligently visits the on-site gym two to three times a week to keep in shape, and no longer needs his walking stick.

When asked why they chose to live at Con Noi, Jeanette explains that they decided to downsize, and Con Noi was the only place they could both agree upon! It offered the lifestyle they were both after, and is handy to everything they need – shopping, transport, etc.

We think Jeanette may well have come up with a new marketing slogan for Con Noi when she says, “at Con Noi, you don’t get wet!” You’re inside the complex – with lifts straight to the secure undercover car park. You can easily drive to the local Westfield Carindale and enter without ever touching any rain.

You’ll often find Joe and Jeanette at our regularly run ‘High Tea and Tour’ mornings, telling our guests about life at Con Noi. These High Teas give guests an opportunity to meet some of our residents and have a guided tour

Our Con Noi residents certainly have style!

Last month, Con Noi hosted a fashion parade. Our Resident’s Committee Activities Director, Gweneth, would like to thank Judith, Clare and her happy group of helpers who assist arranging the fashion parade twice a year, in conjunction with Roz Fridenberg, who runs Portofino Fashion.

Portofino Fashion takes the product to the customer, and has a mission “to supply exceptional, beautiful clothing at fabulous prices” that “mature women want to wear”.

Roz arrived early in the morning and displayed racks of clothes from the Portofino Fashion label; essentially a “pop-up” shop for the women of Con Noi to try on and purchase what they like.

Following this was the Fashion Parade, held in Con Noi’s Piano Bar for friends and families. Claire, Judith, Pat, Gweneth and Hazel channeled their inner model, walking the runway in clothing from the brand.

Everybody had a blast, and you can clearly see the enjoyment and style in the photos below!

The event ended with a morning tea, with profits going towards fundraising for Con Noi’s Resident’s Social Club.

We can’t wait to see what the Social Club brings us next!

Following the retirement of our Con Noi Retirement Village Manager, Allen Collishaw, at the end of last year, we have had internal staff acting in the role whilst recruiting for the perfect fit.

We are immensely grateful for the fantastic work our staff have done acting in this role, and are pleased to announce that we’ve recently filled the role, with Jeffrey Nutter commencing this week.

At Vacenti, we strive to employ committed, competent, empathetic staff with a positive “can do” attitude, who will provide exceptional customer service.

Our Residents Committee was closely involved in the hiring process. They helped shortlist applicants and sat in on the interviews, to ensure that the successful person would be a good fit for both the role and the Con Noi community.

We are excited to welcome Jeffrey Nutter in this role. Jeff brings over 11 years of experience working in retirement villages across Australia.

Before entering this industry, Jeff initially worked as a tradesman then in sales and marketing. He has since worked as a Village Manager with Settlers, Lend Lease, Oak Tree, Southern Cross Care and the Tranquil Group.

He recognises the importance of providing competent, attentive and professional client service and has a strong commitment to objective listening, problem solving and employing compassion.

We look forward to getting to know Jeff better as he settles in to his new position.

In 2007 Mellissa was a regular attendee of aqua aerobics classes.  When the instructor of her class needed to take leave for a few weeks, Melissa took it upon herself to lead the classes – and loved it.  In 2008 she became a qualified health and fitness instructor specialising in aqua aerobics.

In 2015 she was asked to fill in for an instructor at Sam Riley’s Swim Centre at Mt Gravatt.  This led her to be given a regular class with older adults. She found the older group were happy to exercise, would laugh and joke with each other and have a great time.  In 2016, Mellissa undertook a course to specialise in fitness for older adults. Mellissa, now in her 50’s, says that she is someone seniors can relate to.  She understands first-hand what it feels like to have physical limitations.

Mellissa started instructing at Con Noi in September 2018 and has brought smiles (and fitness) to our residents ever since.

Why seniors should join an aqua aerobics class – Mellissa’s top 3 reasons:

  • To improve overall fitness.  Ideally, 70-80 year olds should exercise 2-3 days a week.
  • To improve strength, coordination and balance.  Building up basic functional movements means seniors can remain independent in their own homes for longer.
  • Social enjoyment and group motivation.  An aqua aerobics class is a fun way to exercise.  You get to meet new people and encourage one another.

Some of Mellissa’s senior fitness success stories

Consistency is key – Pushing the boundaries and seeing progress.

A senior lady Mellissa taught had bad legs, couldn’t swim and had a big fear of the water. It wasn’t until her doctor and physio told her to participate in aqua aerobics that she finally attended. In the first couple of weeks she stayed in the shallow end and held onto the bar and just moved slowly. Gradually, week by week, the lady would let go of the bar and venture into the deeper end.  This kind of progress is so rewarding to see.

Improving heart fitness

Another lady in her 70s was having regular stress tests to check her heart health.  She began aqua aerobics classes. Between classes, this lady would use her own noodle and practice the exercises she had learnt.  Three months passed and she took another stress test. The physio found the results surprising as her heart health had increased dramatically.

Parkinson’s calmer

A client with Parkinson’s attended Mellissa’s classes and found that the movement and exercises actually increased her mobility.  She experienced improved mobility in the days after she attended class.

Wheelchair warrior

One of Mellissa’s clients is in a wheelchair and attends weekly exercise classes.  She is an example to all that there are no excuses. Exercises can always be tailored to your ability and designed to improve your health and wellness.

In the 1970s, Allan took a liking to brass instruments. Fancying clarinets, he took lessons to learn and eventually started playing alongside his musical brother in a band. This band played at functions around the Beenleigh district, entertaining audiences from weddings to casual concerts.

Allan also tried his hand at teaching himself to play the saxophone. Allan loves remembering back to the days he would play alongside other saxophones, double basses, piano players, drums and guitars.

To this day, Allan, in his 90s, still plays both instruments. “It keeps my mind active, ” Allan says. “He plays less frequently than he would like,” mentioned his wife Grace, who would go along to all the concerts.

Allan showed us his two beautiful instruments and music sheets of classic songs like ‘Obladi Oblada’ and performed part of the well-known song ‘Tequilla’.

Sometimes he will entertain fellow Con Noi residents on a social evening. Residents not only enjoy Allan’s tunes, they are usually up dancing and singing along too.

Hello,

My name is Catherine and I am currently the Acting Manager at Con Noi Retirement Village. I’m no stranger to Con Noi as I have been relieving for Allen when he went on leave for the past two years. I must begin by giving a big shout out to all of the wonderful Residents of Con Noi who have once again welcomed me back and who have helped me through my learning curve during my tours.

The year is already speeding ahead, so it is good to report that the activities such as water aerobics and gentle exercise are once again in full swing. New members for both activities are always welcomed.

This years Australia day BBQ was well attended by the residents, with some family members joining in the fun.
The residents enjoyed a beautiful fare of Aussie tucker complete with pavlova with all the trimmings.
After lunch, some tried their hand at thong throwing… (try saying that really fast, three times in a row!) and were also treated to some bush ballads.

With the start of a new year, many of the residents have also taken time out of their day to catch up for a chat at our coffee shop, with Chelady preparing the coffees.

The residents have also been busy planning some new activities for the coming months with bingo and Sunday lunches at East Leagues Club to name a few.

We are still receiving enquiries regarding vacancies at Con Noi, so if your family or friends would like to come and take a tour, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0418 588 468. Like us on Facebook and check out our website for the latest information.

Hello everyone,

As you’re reading this I am now retired. I am thankful for the times I have had at Con Noi and wish to share with you the events of December as my last post.

Happy new year to you all. We trust Christmas was a happy time for you all. I know all the residents who attended the Christmas party here at Con Noi had a great night. As we entered the room we all encountered the aroma of roast meat and vegetables being cooked on the rotisserie. The area was decorated beautifully and Christmas decorations adorned the dining room, Christmas tree and tables with all of the baubles and lights and a big Santa on the sleigh.

Dennis Boland played all the Christmas music making the Yuletide come to life. Following the first course, the
Con Noi Choir, which included guest singer Liza Logan, sang 8 carols and Christmas songs which was well accepted by all of the residents and guests gathered.

Sweets were served following the choir. Santa wasn’t too far away as he was ushered in to the singing of ‘jingle bells’. Jolly Santa danced with the residents while Merry Christmas delivered all the chocolates. A happy time was had by all.
Trophies were presented to all the Mah-jong and Card players and to Brian for his great contribution as Chairman of the Resident’s Committee.

Allen (Alias Santa Claus), was presented with a chiming clock and card signed by all the residents as a gift in recognition of his contribution as Manager at Con Noi.

As I say good bye, I would like to wish you all a happy and a safe 2019. Until we meet again.
Please remember that we have apartments available. Please call Alison Quinlan on 0418 588 468 who will be able to assist you with your enquiry or Con Noi Office.

Cheers,

Allen Collishaw
